PRESENTATION ABSTRACTS
Ulf Heinrich, SEG Inc.
XML - Return of the Heirchial Empire
The integration of XML in DB2 for z/OS V9 is often called the revenge of IMS. There is some truth in this because XML is a hierarchical structure, which is now integrated into the relational model. A few questions are brought up with this, like
- How do we access the data in XML structures?
- What about indexing to improve performance?
- Are there recommendations for database design?
In this presentation, I will highlight first experiences with XML integration in DB2 for z/OS. Additionally, I will provide hints and tips on how to improve performance. Last but not least, I will show you why you should recall your old hierarchical "thinking modes" to survive in the new fashionable XML world.
Are You a Runstats Master?
Catalog statistics in DB2 for z/OS are becoming more and more important. With V8, the optimizer takes more advantage of frequency and distribution statistics, and the RUNSTATS utility is enhanced as well. Are you sure that you are considering all the rules to enable the usage of those additional facilities? This presentation shows you what you should take care of to improve performance of your applications without changing a single line of code. After attending this session, you will find tuning possibilities for your environment that you weren’t aware of before. Additionally, RUNSTATS options for V8, V9 and Vnext are discussed in conjunction with useful hints and tips from the Statistics Advisor and SYSCOLDIST. You will learn how to do sanity checks of your catalog statistics.
Ulf Heinrich is the Director of Solutions Delivery at SOFTWARE ENGINEERING GmbH. He specializes in DB2 recovery issues and database maintenance, focusing on the growing requirement for 24x7 operations and cost reduction. As a consultant at large customer sites, he has implemented database maintenance procedures and recovery strategies, and also experienced the pitfalls of recovery scenariosunder real-world recovery pressure. His activities cover EMEA, as well as North America through SE’s U.S. subsidiary, SEGUS Inc. He’s involved in the development of SE’s maintenance and recovery solutions.

Kevin Harrison, IBM
The top 10 of DB2 z/OS v10
A technical deep dive into the 10 top feature areas of DB2. You seen the overview and know what's on the surface. Lets explore the details and look deeper at these major focus areas. We will explore core capability as well as new functions and features to get more out of your DB2 implementation. These cover areas such as virtual storage, security, concurrency, SQL enhancements, improved productivity for programmers and DBAs, and of CPU reduction in core capability.
Kevin Harrison holds an IBM professional certification as a Certified Senior I/T Architect with broad experience in application development, database management systems, architecture development, technical infrastructures, and system integration. He is a Senior Software Engineer with DB2 for z/OS Development at the IBM Silicon Valley Lab and a team member of a worldwide DB2 SWAT team for DB2 on z/OS. Kevin draws on a wide range of experience from 28 years of involvement with DB2 on large systems, with 22 of those years at IBM as a DB2 technical specialist. Kevin has served as a DB2 educator, DB2 user group liaison, led many DB2 design/implementation reviews, and DB2/zSeries performance and tuning engagements. Kevin is certified in several disciplines for DB2 on z/OS and currently is a member of the IBM North American I/T Architect Certification board, and Open Group Master IT Architects. Kevin most recently, is one of the authors of the IBM ITSO Redbook “DB2 9 for z/OS Performance Topics”.
